Yuki And Zero by sal67548

“My dear Zero,” she sighed wistfully, “I hope you grow up quickly by feeding off your hatred,” she told me, ever so gently.  Caressing my hair and face, she continued,”You do want to kill me, don’t you?  I hope to always keep you in my sight.  Your eyes, so filled with hate are mine, and mine alone.  You see Zero, you and I are now bound together by an unbreakable bond,” she said smiling down at me.

I awoke with a start.  Even after all these years, I still dreamt about that night.  The night that damned Pureblood had slaughtered my family in front of me, and then taken my humanity.

A knock on the door shattered my reverie.   I looked over, but before I could tell whoever it was to leave, the door opened and Yuki stepped inside the door, shutting it behind her.  Any thoughts of turning her away vanished as I realized that I wanted her comfort, though I would never admit it.

“You’re…still in bed?” she asked me, sounding nervous somehow.  I didn’t answer.  I knew if I did, she would guess right away that I was shaken from a nightmare.  But she didn’t need any words to realize how I felt, apparently.

“Zero…what’s wrong? Did you have another nightmare?” she asked me, coming over to sit on the bed beside me.  I didn’t want to have this conversation, but I knew she wouldn’t rest until I told her something.

“More of…a memory replaying while I slept,” I told her.  She scooted closer to me with sad eyes, and in a moment of complete vulnerability I leaned over and laid my head on her shoulder.  I could hear her little intake of breath, as if she was shocked that I had.  I supposed she should be; I rarely ever allowed this, much less initiated it.

Seemingly without thinking, she brought her hand to my head and ran her fingers through my hair.  It was very soothing, and within a couple minutes I had closed my eyes and was breathing deeply.

All of the sudden, she moved, just a little, but it was enough that I got a whiff of her blood, pumping tirelessly through her veins.  My bloodlust kicked in and I drew in my breath sharply, trying to pull away from her before I scared her, but it was too late, she had already seen.

“Zero,” she said softly, looking into my crimson eyes and bringing her hand to my cheek.  “It’s ok.”

I looked at her, feeling my thirst but also not wanting to ruin this moment by scaring her.  “Yuki…”

“I mean it Zero.  This is what I chose to do.  It doesn’t matter what I have to do, I’ll do anything to keep you alive.”

Resolve weakening, I tried again to weakly protest, but she leaned in close to me, wrapping her arms tightly around me and making her scent impossible to ignore now.

As if in a trance, I put my arms around her neck, slowly lowering her to the bed.  I followed close behind and laid down next to her.  As swiftly as I could, I pierced her neck with my descended fangs, drawing her blood out.  Only a slight tremor from her and she was still.  Now I brought my hand to her hair, running my hands down it, trying to comfort her.

We stayed this way for a while as I slowly sipped her blood, not wanting to take too much from her.  She laid still, unfathomable to me, as I cursed myself and scoffed at this perversion, this mockery of love.

“Stop standing around, you’re still on duty!” Yuki yelled at me, slapping my shoulder hard.  I hadn’t even heard her coming as I sulked by the edge of the forest surrounding the academy.

“Hey, what is your—!” I started.  She was probably compensating for feeling awkward about me drinking her blood earlier today, but did she really have to hit me that hard?

“By the way, the headmaster gave me some good news.  Remember that girl you saved the other day? Well they were able to erase the whole event from her memory, and she’s doing just fine now! Isn’t that a huge relief?” she said, smiling up at me.

“Not really.  I didn’t agree to go out and hunt that level E just so that I could save somebody else.  What I wanted had absolutely nothing to do with it.  It was just work,” I said.  This seemed to trouble her, and she was quiet for a bit.

“Well, if that’s the way you feel Zero…then I guess that’s how it is.  But it seems to me you’re only interested in doing whatever it is you want to do.  I mean, that’s how you act towards your studies, and that’s why you went to do that job by yourself, isn’t it?  Hunting a vampire is a pretty big deal.  So when you suddenly leave campus to do something like that without telling anyone, who do you think worries the most? For a second there…I thought you’d run away,” she admitted quietly.  Surprised, I looked at her.  I knew she was justified in her worry.  I knew there had been a couple times when I had actually planned to do just that.

“It’s just that…I’m afraid someday you’ll decide to take your revenge on that vampire who killed your family and not tell me anything when you do,” she confided in me.

“If I wanted to do that, I have no obligation to tell you about it,” I said rudely, subconsciously doing what I always did, trying to push her away.

“Yes you do,” she said determinedly, surprising me.  “If you lose control…it’s my job to kill you, isn’t it?  You gave me a gun for that very purpose.  It’s in my desk drawer right now ready and waiting, to remind me of the promise I made to you.”

“That’s true.  I guess you’ll have trouble keeping your promise if I go and disappear without telling you.  But this means you’re assuming I’ll be beaten at my own game, doesn’t it? That’s kinda rude,” I told her.

“Don’t you accuse me of being rude!” she said, hitting me hard in the chest.  “But I do believe in you, k?” she winked at me.

                “That hurt!” I mumbled, coughing.

Just then, I caught the scent of a vampire approaching.  I didn’t quite recognize the scent, but there was something about it that seemed familiar to me…

A girl stood in front of me.  She had long silver hair and greyish purple eyes.  She was petite, and she was wearing the night class uniform.  I had never seen her before, but I felt that I knew her.  I stared in shock as a sense of uneasiness and hatred settled over me.

“Oh, hey Maria.  Something wrong?” Yuki said beside me to the girl.

“I think I may have taken my little prank too far…everyone hates me now,” the girl said softly.

Without much conscious thought, I reached into my uniform and grabbed the Bloody Rose.  I whipped it out, pointing it straight at her.  Before I could pull the trigger, a body was in front of me.

“No!” Yuki yelled at me, holding her hands up in a motion to stop.  “You pulled that gun on her for no reason! Why would you do that?!”

“No…who…are you?” I forced the words through my clenched teeth.

“H-how do you do?  I’m Maria Kurenai,” she said, still hiding behind Yuki.

“I’m sorry if he scared you Maria, he’s a guardian here at the academy like I am.  His name is Zero.  He’s my partner…but he generally doesn’t take things this far…well, not usually,” Yuki told her, sounding slightly uncomfortable.

“Yes, but I shouldn’t be wandering around the grounds so late at night.  I apologize.  And thank you so much for protecting me, Yuki.  You’re nice.  I like girls like you.  You see, good girls like you happen to taste especially delicious Yuki,” she whispered the last part into Yuki’s ear.  She turned, running off as she said, “Now don’t fight!”

As I watched her leave, I noticed someone above us, watching from the balcony.  Looking up, I saw that it was Hanabusa.  So he had seen everything.  I knew it was a long shot, but I knew that he was a lot more intelligent than he seemed, a genius in fact, and I also knew he had a knack for sticking his nose where it didn’t belong.  If anyone could give me information on who this girl was, I knew it was Hanabusa.

The next day, I was following behind Yuki and Yori as we walked through the campus on our lunch break when I got that strange pang again, telling me the transfer student was near.  I had been pondering all day why just the sight of her made me hate her, even to the point of pulling my gun on her last night.

“Hey what’s wrong?” Yuki asked me, seeing my sudden movement.  I didn’t answer as it would be clear what had attracted my attention as soon as she saw.

“You can’t go that way! The day class is still in session!  Maria!” Takuma shouted, as the girl daintily ran through the throngs of day class students.

After it registered with Yuki, she jumped into action.  “What are night class students doing out here?” she said, sounding panicked.  Before she could run off after them, I reached out to restrain her wrist.  She turned to look at me.

“Stay away from that transfer student, the vice dorm president can handle her on his own, ok?” I told her, rather than asked her.  There was something very wrong about that girl, and I didn’t want Yuki anywhere near her.

“Zero…?...okay,” she said after a moment, perhaps realizing that I was right.  Just then, the shrill screams of the day class girls reached my ears and I looked up to see none other than Hanabusa.

“Yuki! Good afternoon.  This is the second time we’ve met during the day,” he said, narrowing his eyes and smiling evilly at his own false implications that they had met other times besides during the day.  I rolled my eyes, wondering why he always felt the need to tease the poor girl.

He walked over to Yuki fearlessly, hugging her from behind as she protested.  “The jealous girls will go mad with envy and bully you from now on, Yuki,” he told her, letting go.  I chose this moment to save her.

“Hanabusa.  If you have a moment, I’d like to have a word with you,” I said, and he looked at me with a look that said that this was the reason he had been out here in the first place.

“Oh, alright.  I actually wanted to talk with you too,” he said casually.  Yuki looked confused.

“Hey…Zero!” she tried to stop me.

“Yuki.  Be careful around Maria Kurenai,” I gave her parting advice.

“Don’t you two go getting into a fight either,” she said, clearly worried with our history of wanting to kill each other.

“So?” Hanabusa asked me as we stood near the wall, countless day class girls surrounding us, but none brave enough to come any closer than they were.

“I want to know something.  Is Maria Kurenai somehow related to that woman?” I asked him, referring to the one who had killed my family.

His eyes narrowed.  “That woman?” he questioned me, though I could tell he already knew who I was referring to.

“Shizuka Hio,” I replied darkly, hating the taste of her name in my mouth.

“Such insolence.  You do realize, you just referred to a Pureblood without using the proper honorific…but I understand.  After all, she is the one who butchered your family,” he said rudely, making me want to hit him.  Reminding myself that he was always rude and insensitive in whatever he did, I was able to rein myself in.

“Alright,” he seemed to come to a decision.  “The Kurenai and Hio lines had a shared ancestry a long, long time ago, but that’s it,” he told me.

“One more question.  No one has been able to track that woman down for four years and that’s because her appearance has changed, hasn’t it?” I asked, my fears about who this girl might be now coming to light with Hanabusa’s revelation.

“I don’t know anything about that.  Only Purebloods themselves know all the powers they possess.  But what’s more important is what you sense about her, and I want to hear that from you,” he said.

“Why is that?” I could not fathom why he would care about my opinion.

“So as to keep peace in the night class?” he said, teasingly.

“Don’t joke,” I told him.  I didn’t think anyone would buy that he was trying to make peace.

He turned around to look at me seriously.  “You are the only one who would know.  Because you have a blood bond with her.”

*Sigh.  Oh Hanabusa.  If you ask me it’s pretty ironic that he’s always talking about how he was raised to be a polite noble, and yet almost everything he does is rude haha.  Anyways, thank you so much for reading, and leave a comment telling me how I’m doing!

*Author’s Note:  This chapter has a tender scene in it that I’m quite fond of.  Enjoy!
